Payment is where foreign residents most often get stuck on FANZA. This guide explains what the official help pages say, why a card can fail even when its brand is supported, and the point-first approach that avoids most problems.
What FANZA officially accepts
According to FANZA’s payment help (support.fanza.jp/payment/article/11301, checked 2026-10-28), cards with the VISA, JCB or Diners logo can be used, including foreign-issued cards of those brands. Note that FANZA Books, the Books unlimited-reading plan and FANZA Doujin accept JCB and Diners only.
| Method | What to know |
|---|---|
| VISA / JCB / Diners | Officially usable (books and doujin: JCB/Diners only). Foreign-issued cards sometimes fail to go through. |
| DMM points | Charge in advance, then pay with points. This is a common workaround for card trouble. |
Check the official help page before you rely on any single method, because accepted brands and rules can change.
Why a supported card can still fail
The brand being listed does not guarantee that your specific card will be approved. Cards issued outside Japan are sometimes declined at checkout, with no obvious reason shown. Typical causes include the issuer’s fraud screening on a transaction from a Japanese merchant, or a mismatch between the details on file and the details you entered. We cannot tell you which applies to your card, only that it happens.
A declined card does not mean your account is in trouble. It means the payment did not go through.
The point-first approach
When a card is unreliable, a common workaround is to charge DMM points first and pay with the points. The steps in outline:
- Log in to your DMM account.
- Open the point charge page. Use browser translation if needed.
- Choose a charge method and an amount.
- Complete the charge and check that the balance has updated.
- At checkout for a purchase, choose to pay with points.
Points can be charged through several methods. Which methods are offered can change, so read the options on the charge page itself. Buy the amount you actually need rather than a large balance.
If you travel abroad
Even a card that works fine at home stops working when you access FANZA from outside Japan. The help page states that customers accessing from outside Japan cannot use credit cards (support.fanza.jp/payment/article/48822, note 1). If you plan a trip, charge your points before you leave and treat points as your main payment method.
Prepaid codes
For some other Japanese stores, overseas buyers use prepaid codes bought from international resellers. We have not confirmed that this route works for FANZA, so we do not recommend it here. Check the FANZA charge page and help pages for the methods that are currently accepted.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the card number, expiry date and name were entered exactly as on the card.
- Try a different card if you have one.
- Contact your card issuer and ask whether the payment was blocked.
- Switch to charging points instead of paying directly with the card.
- Read the official help pages for the current rules.
